The End of Slacktivism: How to Understand, Facilitate and Deepen Online Engagement

slacktivism Charlie Brown

Liking a social media post, clicking a link, visiting a website and even reading an email or signing an online petition, all of the above may seem as trivial acts of engagement, when your organization strives to advance complicated social, political, environmental or cultural agendas. However when you envision these individual actions as parts of an individual’s journey up the mountain of engagement, you can start to see how even a single Facebook like, or one opened email, can constitute a crucial act of engagement for your organization.

But how do you visualize an engagement scheme that fits your organization? What tracking is needed and what it will cost you? Find out how one the leading Canadian online advocacy groups, OpenMedia, understands and facilitates online engagement and learn how you can can help your supporters find their way to deeper online engagement.

Creating a Digital Community: The Adventures (and misadventures) of Fundraiser Grrl

Creating a Digital Community: The Adventures (and misadventures) of Fundraiser Grrl

In February 2013 Fundraiser Grrl was born, from a desire to bring together fundraisers from around the world – to commiserate, eye roll, sympathize and laugh out loud at the bizarre and amazing moments we all experience in our crazy wonderful careers. Since it began, over 200,000 fundraisers have visited the site, and it averages over 1,000 visitors per day.

Rory is a major gits fundraiser, who had little to no experience with the digital marketing, when she started the site. In this session, she will share what she has learned about using social media to build a community, what worked, and what didn’t, and how to apply this to your work in the non-profit sector.

September 2: $ocial Media? Using small wins to grow social media revenue

$ocial Media? Using small wins to grow social media revenue event image

Ever heard it said “there’s no ‘$’ in social media. Just a plain old letter ‘s’?” Many organizations have found that a strong social media presence has not yet translated directly into significant fundraising revenue.

Shoni Field will share the BC SPCA’s experiences using a ‘small wins’ approach to growing their social media sourced revenue.

Using case studies that reference some of the BC SPCAs successful online campaigns including BC SPCA Medical Emergency, Second Chance Holiday Campaign, Calendar Contest and National Cupcake Days she’ll explore:

  • Whether a shifting emphasis from transactional to relational fundraising fits better with the social media psyche.
  • How we move social media supporters out of their silo.
  • What role virtual peer2peer models can play in growing social media sourced revenue.

EVENT REPORT: Learning from a loss – digital lessons from the 2013 BC NDP Election campaign

It’s often said that we can learn more from failure than success. At Net2van’s April 1 meetup we took a look at the BC NDP’s 2013 election digital strategy. Michael Roy talked about successful tactics and tools, and the lessons he learned. Despite the failure of the campaign, the digital effort – online engagement, fundraising, and outreach – broke new ground in many areas.

We are happy to share video, slides and photos from the event.

Lean Principles for Nonprofits: Because Your Annual Plan is a Fraud

Starting, building and operating a nonprofit organization is done under conditions of extreme uncertainty, but we plan with confidence. Enormous energy is put into Five Year Strategic Plans, Annual Plans and Quarterly plans, but then real life intrudes and the reality is that there’s only the vaguest resemblance between our plans and our actual work. So much wasted time! There’s got to be a better way.

Kayvon Khalilzadeh of Lean Startup Vancouver will introduce us to the concept of the lean startup

Lean Startup is a methodology that favors experimentation over elaborate planning, customer feedback over intuition, and iterative design over traditional “big design up front” development. Although the methodology is just a few years old, its concepts—such as “minimum viable product” and “pivoting” have quickly taken root in the start-up world. Now it’s time for the nonprofit sector to adopt this innovative approach.

We are going to discuss topics like:

  • What is Lean Startup?
  • Why is Lean important? What is the point?
  • What is Lean for Nonprofit? Is it any different than for the private sector?
  • Learn about Lean processes
  • Discover Lean tools

Mo Money Mo Problems | What you need to know about collecting online donations

My kids will never write a cheque, and in a few short years neither will the majority of your donor base. While it used to be acceptable to collect money ‘any way possible’ online, the data is telling us that donors want a donation experience that is easy to follow, on brand and connects the donor with the cause. How we accomplish these things without compromising security, CRA compliance and more is not always straightforward. This session will cover the basics of:

  • Compliance and Law with respect to donation processing and the CRA
  • The 101’s of payment processing terms, security and must knows
  • How you can get the most out of your online donation experience

This session is for:

  • New fundraisers who want to learn the ropes of accepting money online
  • Experienced fundraisers who are looking for ways to make their program more successful
  • Web and online staff responsible for making all the online donation stuff work ?
